The Institute for Nonprofit Practice was founded in Boston in 2007 by Barry Dym, Ph.D. During his career as a nonprofit founder, consultant, and coach, he observed and sought to address several critical issues threatening the effectiveness of the nonprofit sector:

  • Under-investment in leadership development
  • A succession crisis triggered by the retirement of the baby boomers
  • The need for more diverse leadership that reflects communities served
  • The Core Certificate Program was created to equip nonprofit executives and middle managers with the skills needed to strengthen their organizations. In 2012, we launched Community Fellows Program for emerging leaders of color to support the growth of a robust and diverse leadership pipeline.

What began as a small class of 14 students in Boston has steadily grown in response to demand. In 2009, the Institute opened a second program site in Lowell, Massachusetts and in 2015, a third site in Providence, Rhode Island. To date, nearly 1,000 leaders have graduated from our programs.

The Institute for Nonprofit Practice is affiliated with Tufts University's Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life.
